Appendices of the ESIA’s

To support the engagement processes in both Construction and Operations phases, we have published various general information documents, which can be found in the Document Library below. These include:

In order to realise the TurkStream Offshore Gas Pipeline, we conducted various studies to assess potential environmental and social impacts and to guide us in developing measures to avoid, mitigate or minimize them. The results of these studies were compiled into a number of regulatory and supplementary assessment documents:

Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), both for Russia and Turkey, to meet the national regulatory requirements of both countries;
Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) for Russia onshore and offshore and offshore in Turkey to follow the requirements of international finance institutions;
Supplementary studies onshore in Turkey, again to meet the requirements of international finance institutions.

Other available documents include general environmental, social, health & safety policies of the Project Company and information materials that we created for a general audience in both Russia and Turkey.

The Environmental and Social studies included engagement and dialogue with a range of stakeholders in both the Project countries. Our approach to stakeholder engagement is described on the stakeholder engagement page of the website.

Regulatory Assessments

We have developed the Russian and Turkish sectors of the pipeline in line with national legislative and permitting requirements, which includes assessing both the onshore and offshore sections of the Project from an environmental and social perspective.

In Russia, we obtained an approved EIA for the previous South Stream Offshore Gas Pipeline project in 2014. The EIA covered both the onshore and offshore segments of the pipeline from the location near Anapa on the Black Sea coast out to the border of the Russian EEZ.

In Turkey, we obtained an approved EIA in 2014 in the context of the South Stream Offshore Gas Pipeline. This EIA was relevant for the section that extended from the Russian EEZ to the border of the Turkish and Bulgarian Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ). We used the findings of the surveys and assessments that we already conducted for the South Stream Offshore Gas Pipeline for the development of the TurkStream Offshore Gas Pipeline. As the route up to the edge of the Turkish and Bulgarian EEZs remained the same for the TurkStream Offshore Gas Pipeline, no further EIAs were required for this section as determined by the Turkish authorities.

We conducted a separate EIA within the scope of the TurkStream Pipeline Project for the section that stretches from the border of the Turkish and Bulgarian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) to the Turkish coastline, which was approved in October 2017.

Supplementary Studies

We developed the TurkStream Project in compliance with Russian and Turkish permitting requirements and in line with international finance standards including the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards (PS) on Environmental & Social Sustainability (2012) and the Equator Principles III. The international finance standards requirements for environmental and social assessments have some differences when compared to the national regulatory requirements in Russia and Turkey.

To address these differences, we undertook a range of studies and assessments to supplement the national EIA processes. For the South Stream Offshore Gas Pipeline, these studies were collated to form the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment documents and covered the Project from onshore in Russia to the border of the Turkish EEZ with Bulgaria. The remainder of the route from this point to onshore in Turkey was covered by a set of uncollated topic-specific supplementary studies.
